Turning a forgotten industrial tragedy into a living national memory.
On the 14th October 1913, the small town of Senghenydd, in South Wales, suffered the worst mining disaster in British history. A total of 439 men and boys lost their lives. The photographer, W. Benton, captured the tragedy as it unfolded, and later published the results as a set of postcards, intended to act as an everlasting memorial. The Price of Coal, in collaboration with the Museum of Wales, reanimates Benton’s photographs to reveal the human story behind the tragedy and reflect on the hardship that helped shape a nation.
